All About Terrazzo Tile

Terrazzo brings old-world Italian character to a modern project.

Garden State Tile’s Ancona Terrazzo collection is imported directly from Ancona, Italy — and unlike many imported specialty materials, it’s warehoused right here in the U.S. for a domestic timeline.

What is Terrazzo Tile?

Square pieces of Terrazzo tile laid next to each other for displaying
  • What it is: A composite surface made of recycled marble and stone chips set in a cement or resin binder, then ground and honed to a smooth, flat finish.
  • A material with history: Originating in 15th-century Venice as a way to repurpose leftover marble, terrazzo is a signature look in luxury residential and hospitality design.
  • No two chips alike: Because the marble chips are natural, every tile has its own subtle blend of color, size, and pattern — part of its handcrafted character.
  • Garden State Tile’s Ancona Collection: An authentic, Italian-made terrazzo in 10 distinctive colorways, in a versatile 16″x16″honed, rectified format.

Care & Maintenance

Everyday Cleaning

  • Sweep or dust-mop regularly to keep grit from scratching the honed surface.
  • Damp-mop with a pH-neutral cleaner made for natural stone or terrazzo.
  • Wipe up spills promptly — wine, coffee, and citrus can stain if left to sit.
  • Use walk-off mats at entries to reduce the grit tracked onto the floor.

Sealing & Long-term Care

  • Terrazzo should be sealed at installation and resealed on a regular schedule.
  • Ask your GST consultant which sealer and interval are right for the Ancona collection.
  • Never use vinegar, bleach, ammonia, or other acidic or abrasive cleaners.
  • Use felt pads under furniture and avoid dragging heavy items across the surface.

Do’s & Dont’s

DO

  • Ask about the in-stock lead time (5–10 days) if your project timeline is tight.
  • Order your full square footage in one run, since natural chips vary slightly batch to batch.
  • Have terrazzo sealed at installation and on a regular resealing schedule after that.
  • Expect — and love — the natural variation that makes every terrazzo floor one of a kind.

DON’T

  • Don’t clean with vinegar, citrus, bleach, or ammonia — they can etch the marble chips and cement binder.
  • Don’t assume every terrazzo colorway is in stock; non-stock special orders carry a 2,700 sq. ft. minimum.
  • Don’t skip sealing; unsealed terrazzo is more susceptible to staining.
  • Don’t use abrasive scouring pads, which can dull the honed finish over time.
