All About Terrazzo Tile

What is Terrazzo tile?

With origins dating back to 15th-century Venice, Italian craftsmen repurposed leftover fragments of marble and natural stone embedded in cement or clay, each tile is carefully ground and honed to achieve a smooth, refined finish. Modern terrazzo often includes glass, shell, and other luminous aggregates for added visual appeal. Bonded with epoxy or resin, contemporary terrazzo is stronger and lasts longer. Each tile contains naturally varied marble chips with its own distinctive blend of color, scale, and pattern.

Care & Maintenance

Everyday Cleaning

Sweep or dust-mop regularly to keep grit from scratching the honed surface.

Damp-mop with a pH-neutral cleaner made for natural stone or terrazzo.

Wipe up spills promptly — wine, coffee, and citrus can stain if left to sit.

Use walk-off mats at entries to reduce the grit tracked onto the floor.

Sealing & Long-term Care

Terrazzo should be sealed at installation and resealed on a regular schedule.

Ask your GST consultant which sealer and interval are right for sealing terrazzo tile.

Never use vinegar, bleach, ammonia, or other acidic or abrasive cleaners

Use felt pads under furniture and avoid dragging heavy items across the surface.
